Everything is Art – Artist Portraits by Daniel Biskup

People, politics, and beauty—that is what interests Daniel Biskup. The photographer, who lives in Augsburg and Berlin, is known for his documentary photographs of contemporary history. At the Schaezlerpalais, he is now presenting a new facet of his work for the first time: artist portraits.

The first of the exhibited images were taken as early as 1989 at the Glaspalast in Augsburg. At the time, it was a “lost place” of the textile industry; today, it is the Kunsthalle Augsburg. Artists from the Augsburg scene, such as Peter Lochmüller, Lisa Junghans, and Martin Eder, were already being photographed there back then. Over the years, Ai Weiwei, Gilbert & George, Georg Baselitz, and many others joined them.

Even as a child, he attended fashion shows with his grandmother, collected every issue of German Vogue, and has always been passionate about photography. Born in Bonn in 1962, after completing an apprenticeship as a mail carrier, he moved to Augsburg to earn his high school diploma and pursue his studies. He photographed at every opportunity. In 1982, his first photograph appeared on the front page of the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung. The upheavals of Perestroika drew him to the Soviet Union in 1988, and in 1989 he documented the fall of the Berlin Wall. His portfolio since then has been wide-ranging.

In recent years, Daniel Biskup has been portraying prominent figures from the worlds of politics, culture, and business around the globe. His works are also held in private and public collections. His paintings were previously on display at the Schaezlerpalais in Augsburg in 2017 as part of the exhibition “Russia – From Perestroika to Putin” and in 2019 in “Years of Transition.”
