Cry for colour Paintings by Braebys

28.3.-6.7.2025 at Café und Liebertzimmer des Schaezlerpalais

The artist Braebys - whose real name was Daniel Schäfer and who died in January 2025 - could not be pigeonholed. He falls out of all categories - social, personal and painterly. His art oscillates between happening, installation, collage, painting and drawing. The paintings on display at the Schaezlerpalais can best be described as neo-expressive, but they also contain elements of graffiti art. They are characterised by a strong, vibrant colourfulness combined with a formal language that often veers towards the surreal. Braeby's pictorial worlds are enigmatic, frightening, enigmatic, but also sometimes underlaid with humour. They show the viewer inner views of a driven, manic creator.

Daniel Schäfer (1958-2025), who lived in Brebach in Saarland for many years, had a traumatic childhood and youth, he dropped out of school, ended up in prison and began painting and cycling, ultimately covering well over half a million kilometres. He drew and painted through the night, produced several thousand works on paper, painted a wide variety of support materials, furniture, cupboards, boxes, fabrics and wrote over 800 diaries.

We cordially invite all interested parties to the opening on Thursday, 27 March 2025, 6 pm in the Schaezlerpalais.
With an introduction to the work by Dr Berhold Schmidt and the cabaret artist Alice Hoffmann, the artist's partner of many years.
