Hermann Fischer – illustrator and watercolourist
On the 120th anniversary of his birth
31.10.2025 – 28.06.2026 at Café und Liebertzimmer des Schaezlerpalais
The Augsburg draughtsman and watercolourist Hermann Fischer (1905-1991) began drawing as a child. A view of the Fünffingerles Tower from 1921 already shows the talent of the 16-year-old. During his architecture studies, his focus was initially on architecture, buildings and street spaces, which he captured analytically. In addition, he was always interested in the integration of architecture into the landscape and urban environment, as well as the relationship between buildings and their surroundings. The latter played an increasingly important role in his watercolours in particular.
During his countless travels in his Swabian homeland, the Alps, Italy and France, he repeatedly created colouristically well-balanced compositions of great perfection. Fischer willingly passed on his knowledge. He was very popular as a teacher at the Augsburg Polytechnic, as he had a great didactic skill in introducing his students to the art of drawing and watercolour painting.
Hermann Fischer's drawings are partly spontaneous and sketch-like. They provide an insight into his creative process, which culminates above all in his large watercolours.
„Sein Gestalten ist niemals penibel, kleinteilig, von Akribie beseelt, sondern großzügig, energisch, trotz aller Disziplin, die die Technik des Aquarells verlangt, in den Pinselstrichen wild.“ (‘His style is never meticulous, detailed or inspired by precision, but rather generous, energetic and, despite all the discipline required by the technique of watercolour painting, wild in its brushstrokes.’) Dr. Gode Krämer, Author and art historian
You are cordially invited to the opening on Thursday, 30 October 2025, at 6 p.m., in the Café and Liebertzimmer des Schaezlerpalais.
