Mythology and ritual at your fingertips Excavations by the University of Augsburg in a Sanctuary in Sicily

05/26-07/30/2023 in the Römerlager at Zeughaus

Experience antiquity up close - this is possible in the special exhibition "Mythology and Ritual at your fingertips:

Excavations by the University of Augsburg in a Sanctuary on Sicily". In the Roman camp, history buffs, mythology fans and archaeology enthusiasts can learn more about the ritual everyday life of the Greek city of Akragas from 26 May until the end of July 2023. The exhibition was conceived and realised as part of a project by students and graduates of the Art and Cultural History programme at the University's Faculty of Philology and History in exchange with German and international experts.

The exhibition presents a suburban ancient Greek sanctuary located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Valle dei Templi Agrigento". It existed from the end of the 6th to around the middle of the 4th century BC and has been archaeologically explored since 2014 by an interdisciplinary team from the University of Augsburg together with cooperation partners.

In addition to the objects and organic materials of ancient cult practice, the Augsburg research on the sanctuary at the gates of ancient Akragas also provides exciting contexts of action, for example on the practice of votive offerings. Ancient sacred rituals can be reconstructed and now also made vivid in Augsburg with the help of replicas of the finds. In addition, the methods of the archaeologists exploring the sanctuary are explained to the visitors.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on 25 May 2023 at 6 pm. Cordial invitation!
