From drawing to forgingErich Nüchter (1903-1989)

14.11.2025–15.03.2026 at Grafischen Kabinett

The artistic blacksmith Erich Nüchter (1903-1989) discovered his artistic streak at an early age. Trained as a locksmith and blacksmith in Augsburg, he enrolled at the Augsburg Art School in 1920 and studied painting there, among others with Hans Döllgast (1891-1974) and Karl Rupflin (1889-1973). His particular fondness for caricature and his lifelong practice of blacksmithing enabled him to transform iron into fine artistic forms with great skill and precision. He always developed his lively figures and motifs through drawing and then translated them into three-dimensional form on the anvil.

The exhibition shows around 40 wrought iron works and drawings, including two major works, the Fugger train and the Christmas crib. Visitors can clearly follow the path from the artistic idea to the finished wrought iron work.

We cordially invite all interested parties to the opening on Thursday, 13 November 2025, at 6 pm, in the ballroom of the Schaezlerpalais.
