The romance of the landscapeFranz Gallus Weber (1794–1876)

In the 19th century, the great outdoors, the beautiful landscape, was a widespread favourite motif for artists. This was also the case for Franz Gallus Weber, who was actually a lieutenant colonel in the Bavarian army. He came to Augsburg as a piece caster to produce cannons, rifles, sabres and small metal parts for the Bavarian military. Due to family misfortunes, he tried to distract himself and - as the son of a sculptor - took up drawing and watercolour painting.
As a soldier in Augsburg, he was initially interested in the romantically decaying city fortifications and especially the old city gates, which were natural points of attack for an artilleryman. On his business trips and manoeuvres, however, he also visited the Swabian countryside, pulled out his sketchbook and captured villages, valleys, forests, castles and palaces in pleasing sketches and watercolours. With his small works of art, he described Swabia in a way that we can no longer experience in detail due to the changing times.
We cordially invite you to the opening on Thursday, 20 February, at 6 pm!
