The Via Claudia AugustaA cultural axis of Europe
From December 12, 2024 at Römerlager im Zeughaus
It is the only Roman road that bears the name of its imperial originator, Emperor Claudius. Stretching from northern Italy to the Bavarian Alpine foothills, it connected the Mediterranean and the Po River with the Danube. Even after centuries, this ancient monument remains a cultural axis for tourists and residents across three countries and several European regions. Numerous Roman relics can still be seen today, not only in Augsburg but also along the route, both in many museums and sometimes even at their original sites.
From October 2024, the exhibition “The Via Claudia Augusta, a cultural axis of Europe” in the Roman Camp in the Zeughaus will provide information about the historical origins of this important road and about opportunities to discover traces of the Roman past as well as important sights from many eras along the Via Claudia.
The exhibition is a cooperation with Regio Augsburg Tourismus GmbH.
