Traveling earthPictures and drawings by Heinz Braun (1938-1986)

10/06-11/12/2023 at Holbeinhaus

In the work of Heinz Braun a part of the Bavarian cultural landscape of the 1960s, 70s and 80s comes to light. Especially the life in the artists´ circles around Munich is noticeable in his pictures and drawings. The works of the self-taught artist bear witness to meetings with fellow painters and friends, refer to his acting in a number of films by Herbert Achternbusch, and are always confrontations with himself.

Jürgen Serke, a journalist for Stern, heard Heinz Braun saying in his studio one evening, „Die Erde verreist, ich muss sehen, wie ich auf die Arche komme“ (engl.: The earth is going on a journey, I have to see how I get on the ark.) On the one hand, this quotation reflects Heinz Braun's imaginative and individual personality; on the other hand, it expresses his struggle against throat cancer in the last years of his life.

The exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in a Bavarian artist's life that had its center westwards from Munich in the 1970s and 80s and was preoccupied with fears, difficulties, elations, and longings, but also with manifold questions about being an artist.
