David Hanvald - Discrete Disposition

05/12-09/24/2023 in Halle 1 – Raum für Kunst im Glaspalast

David Hanvald is a painter of geometric structures, which he places in relation to the picture support with great clarity. It is precisely this relationship between the pictorial object and the pictorial ground that Hanvald constantly redefines and questions. Sometimes the ground is quite classically a white canvas, sometimes it is broken up, fragmented, sometimes its boundaries shift beyond the canvas boundaries, another time his pictorial structures even become plastic or installative.
David Hanvald removes the boundaries of painting, provides it with space in a new way. In this respect, Hanvald's brushstrokes can be understood as a liberation of color from the canvas, which, however, always remains closely connected to it. Painting becomes a medium of dissolution of boundaries.
Hanvald goes one step further in his installations, in which he makes painting spatially tangible on cubic image carriers, cubes, blocks, panels, and stelae. In these intallative works, Hanvald responds to the environment, that is, he works with real space by making it visible through his painterly works. David Hanvald is not only a painter of dissolution of boundaries, but he is also a painter of space, who seeks to be very aware of the position within which he moves.

The exhibition takes place within the framework of the German-Czech Cultural Days DIALOG 2023 in exchange with Augsburg's twin city Liberec/czech republic.
